Are you an artlover or artist on a budget, looking for art galleries and museums in London UK, that offer free exhibitions to fuel your inspiration and get creative ideas flowing.
London boasts a vibrant art scene with an abundance of galleries that offer free exhibitions to ignite your creative spirit. Focusing on my favourite aspects of art, the trio: colour, collage, and mixed media , I will be directing you to the art galleries that may have free exhibitions throughout the year and where I go to find creative inspiration and learn about other artists and their practice.
Colour Immersion:
Tate Modern: Explore the power of colour through the ages via the museum's permanent collection. Look for works by Mark Rothko, whose colour field paintings create a meditative atmosphere, or the vibrant pop art of Andy Warhol.
Museum of London - Docklands: This will be the museum to visit until the London Museum reopens in 2026 in Smithfields . Journey to a bygone era filled with interesting artifacts and stories about the vibrant colours and past life of London. Explore the various galleries in the museum to view
Now Gallery - Greenwich Peninsula: This contemporary gallery space has been based in the Greenwich Peninsula for the last ten years. It is a free public gallery space exhibiting contemporary art, design, photography and fashion. The occasional exhibitions I have attended here are inherently vibrant and full of colour.

Collage Captivation:
Frieze Masters (Somerset House - October only): While not entirely free (it has a concession period every evening), Frieze Masters offers a glimpse into the world of contemporary collage. See how established artists are pushing boundaries and redefining the medium.
WhiteChapel Art Gallery: Immerse yourself in the rich colours of Modern and Contemporary Art at this east London gallery. They show case UK and global artists. Keep an eye out for temporary exhibitions featuring collage artists. Past shows have included Hannah Collins, whose dreamlike collages explore themes of memory and identity.
Tate Modern: If collage is your thing, then visit the Tate Modern, Natalie Bell Building, Level 4 West, Room 2, to get inspiration from an array of collage artist combining materials and objects to great effect.
Mixed-Media Marvels:
Serpentine Galleries: Renowned for showcasing cutting-edge contemporary art, Serpentine often features exhibitions with a mixed-media, textile focus. Discover innovative architectural installations and thought-provoking pieces that challenge traditional structural boundaries at the Serpentine Gallery;

Barbican Centre: This cultural hub frequently features exhibitions that bridge the gap between visual art, film, theatre, and music. Expect to see mixed-media installations that push the boundaries of artistic expression. Be on the lookout for fabulous art and design exhibitions. Visit the website and search for the ' Free things to do' page to check out the latest installations and commissions displayed in the public spaces.
Victoria and Albert Museum: Get lost in the vast collection of mixed-media artworks. Explore textiles, ceramics, and sculptures that combine various materials to create stunning visual experiences. Look out for works by contemporary artists like Grayson Perry, whose ceramics often incorporate collage and mixed-media elements.

Interesting Extra:
Wellcome Collection: A gem of a museum, not far from the British Library on the Euston Road, London, NW1,
While the major museums and galleries offer a wealth of free exhibitions and events, don't overlook the vibrant network of independent galleries in London's diverse boroughs and aim to explore these local gems. Trawl through the museum and gallery websites to discover hidden artists and the museums showcasing the work of emerging artists and designers who experiment with colour, collage, and mixed media techniques.
Pro Tip: Be a savvy art explorer! Many galleries offer extended hours or free evening events. Additionally, some museums have designated free event days, so plan your art adventure accordingly. Check the exhibition dates and opening hours before you head out. Happy exploring, and let the colours, textures, and creative energy of London inspire you!!!
